Joyce DiDonato, Diana Damrau, Piotr Beczala Star in Grand Teatre del Liceu 2018-19 Season

Barcelona’s Grand Teatre del Liceu has announced its 2018-19 season, presenting a number of exciting, fully-staged or concert-style productions, as well as a number of recital performances.

The Ring Without Words

Josep Pons will be conducting Lorin Maazel’s 90-minute arrangement of Wagner’s epic “Ring” cycle.

Performance Date: July 25, 2018

I Puritani

Featuring Javier Camarena as Lord Arturo Talbo, Gianfranco Montresor as Lord Gualtiero Valton, and the role of Elvira being performed by Pretty Yende (5, 8, 11, 14, 19 of October) and Maria Jose Moreno (7, 10, 13, 16, 21 of October.)

Performance Dates: October 5 – 21, 2018

Candide

John Demain will be conducting this concert performance of Bernstein’s “Candide,” featuring Paul Appley in the title role, Kathryn Lewek as Cunegonde, Kevin Burdette as Dr. Pangloss, and Jordi Boixadera as the Narrator.

Performance Dates: October 18 and 20, 2018

Katya Kabanova

Soprano Patricia Racette will sing in the title role, opposite Francisco Vas’ Tikhon Ivantix Kabanova, and Rosie Aldridge as Marfa Ignatievna “Kabanicha” Kabanova.

Wagner: Influence and Inspration

Josep Pons will conduct this recital of Schubert’s unfinished Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D.759, with mezzo-soprano Anna Larsson and tenor Nikolai Schukoff.

Piotr Beczala

The tenor will appear in recital for one night only.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Josep Vila I Jover will conduct this concert of Dickens Christmas classic. Joining the Liceu’s Symphony Orchestra will be the children’s Cor Infantil Amics de la Unio choir.

L’Italiana In Algeria 

The role of Mustafa will be performed by Luca Pisaroni (13, 15, 18, 21 of December) opposite Varudhi Abrahamyan’s Isabella; Simon Orfila will perform the role (14, 17, 19, 22, 23 of December) with Maite Beaumont as Isabella.

Madama Butterfly 

Lianna Haroutounian and Ainhoa Arteta star as Cio-Cio San, Jorge de Leon and Rame Lahaj as Lieutenant Pinkerton, with Ana Ibarra and Justina Gringyte as Suzuki.

Performance Dates: January 12 – 29, 2019

Irene Theorin: Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival

Soprano Irene Theorin will be singing a selection from Nordic composers, such as Ture Rangstrom and Jean Sibelius, as well as from Strauss and Schubert.

Performance Dates: March 14, 2019

Rodelinda 

The Handel opera will feature counter-tenor Bejun Mehta as Bertarido, and Lisette Oropoesa in the title role.

Performance Dates: March 2 – 15, 2019

Hamlet

Diana Damrau will headline a concert performance of the Thomas opera alongside Carlos Álvarez, Nicolas Testé, and Celso Albelo.

La Gioconda

Ponchielli’s opera will get a series of performances with a number of major stars including Iréne Theorin and Anna Pirozzi both alternating the title role. Other artists performing include Dolora Zajick, Veronica Simeoni, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Carlo Colombara, María José Montiel, Brian Jagde, and Andrea Carè.

Les Pêcheurs de Perles

Bizet’s melodic gem will get a run with two casts that will include Ekaterina Bakanova and Olga Kulchynska as Leila, John Osborn and Dmitry Korchak as Nadir, and Michael Adams and Borja Quiza as Zurga.

Performance Dates: May 13-25, 2019

Agrippina

For one night only, audiences can experience Luca Pisaroni, Joyce DiDonato, Franco Fagioli, Kathryn Lewek, Andrea Mastroni, Marie-Claude Lemieux, and Jakub Orlinski in Handel’s opera.

Performance Date: May 18, 2019

Tosca

Liudmyla Monastyrska and Tatiana Serjan alternate the title role while Fabio Sartori and Roberto Aronica both star as Cavaradossi. Erwin Schrott and Lucio Gallo appear as Scarpia.

Performance Dates: June 9-28, 2019

Luisa Miller

Sondra Radvanovsky and Eleonora Burrato take turns as Verdi’s heroine while Luca Salsi and Juan Jesús Rodríguez appear as her father Miller. Piotr Beczala and Arturo Chacón-Cruz appear as Rodolfo.
