This weekend its all about star performances, repertory staples, new productions and a season opening. Check out what we believe you need to see.

Eugene Onegin Wiener Staatsoper, Austria

Marina Rebeka continues the run in her first Tatiana alongside a star cast that includes Boris Pinkhasovich in the title role, Pavol Breslik as Lenski and Ferruccio Furlanetto as Gremin. The revival is conducted by Michael Güttler.

Die Tote Stadt – Bayerische Staatsoper, Germany

Marlis Petersen and Jonas Kaufmann star in Korngolds’s masterpiece in a new production by Simon Stone. The production will also star Andrzej Filonczyk and Jennifer Johnston with Kirill Petrenko conducting.

Samson et Dalila – Staatsoper Berlin, Germany

Oscar nominee Damián Szifron makes his operatic debut in Saint-Saens masterpiece with Daniel Barenboim conducting. The cast includes Elīna Garanča, Brandon Jovanovich, Michael Volle, and Kwangchul Youn.

Lucrezia Borgia – Donizetti Opera Festival, Italy

The Donizetti Festival opens its final opera of the 2019 festival. The critical edition from Paris is set to star Bel Canto expert Carmela Remigio and recent Operalia winner Xabier Anduaga. Music Director Riccardo Frizza takes the podium with a cast that also includes Varduhi Abrahamyan and Marko Mimica. Andrea Bernard directs the new production.

Don Carlo -Teatro la Fenice, Italy

After closing due to the the flood, the Teatro La Fenice will open its 2019-20 season with a Verdi’s late period masterpiece with Piero Pretti in the title role. The cast will also include Maria Agresta, Alex Esposito, Veronica Simeoni, Julian Kim and Marco Spotti. Myung-Whun Chung conducts Robert Carsen’s production.

Jerusalem – Bilbao Opera, Spain

Jorge de León, Rocío Ignacio, Michele Pertusi, and Pablo Gálvez sing the rarely performed Verdi opera which is set to be conducted by Francesco Ivan Ciampa. Francisco Negrín directs the production.
