By David SalazarAs July comes to a close we are fortunate to bring you another week of unique opera streams. Three hail from one company in Germany, but all of them are undeniably worth a look. We also have some unique streams from a number of other companies and organizations around the world.
So without further ado, here are our top operas to stream this week.
Idomeneo – Bayerische Staatsoper (NOW)
The Bayerische Staatsoper will feature prominently in this week’s list. First up will be Antú Romero Nunes’ production of Mozart’s “Idomeneo” starring Matthew Polenzani in the title role alongside Emily D’Angelo, Olga Kylchynska, and Hanna-Elisabeth Müller.
Tu Se Morta – Welsh National Opera (NOW)
The Welsh National Opera has unveiled a new short film series starting with this Monteverdi aria from “Orfeo.” This particular video is presented through the lens of Mathilde Lopez, who explores sadness, powerlessness, and how we seek to recapture what we have lost.
MON COEUR – Carson Gilmore (NOW)
Director Carson Gilmore has unveiled a new series of aria adaptations, including his latest release, which explores the thematic struggles of the famed “Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix” from “Samson et Dalila.” The film stars mezzo-soprano Roksana Zeinapur, Kelly Curran, and David Conley.
Cavalleria Rusticana – Arena di Verona / Rai3 (July 27)
Rai3 will present a June 25 performance of Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” starring Sonia Ganassi, Clarissa Leonardi, Murat Karahan, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, and Agostina Smimmero.
Il Trovatore – Teatro dell’Opera di Roma (July 28)
OperaVision will showcase this Verdi classic from the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. The work will feature a star-studded cast led by Roberta Mantegna, Clémentine Margaine, Fabio Sartori, and Christopher Maltman.
Her War – Téte à Téte Opera Festival (July 29)
This unique opera festival is opening with a performance of “Her War.” The opera, with music by Edwin Roxburgh and words by Jonathan Ruffle, is based on academic data that explored the parallels between the traumatizing experiences of World War I nurses with those who worked on hospital COVID units. Scored for trumpet and soprano, the opera relates the story of a WWI nurse who returns home to an indifferent government, turning her into a force for nurses’ rights.
The Point of Inflection – Bayerische Staatsoper (July 30)
The Bayerische Staatsoper (once again) is set to present a major concert as part of its festival. The showcase will include a number of top-notch opera stars including Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau, Elīna Garanča, Nina Stemme, Alex Esposito, Christian Gerhaher, Anja Harteros, Ermonela Jaho, Anja Kampe, Wolfgang Koch, Anne Sofie von Otter, Marlis Petersen, Anne Schwanewilms, Sir Bryn Terfel, Pavol Breslik, and Georg Zeppenfeld. The concert will feature music from a wide range of operas by Wagner, Poulenc, Strauss, Schubert, Korngold, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Dvorak, Giordano, and Donizetti, among others.
Tristan und Isolde – Bayerische Staatsoper (July 31)
In what is likely one of the most anticipated streams of the year (and the last from the Bayerische Staatsoper on this list), audiences will get a chance to see Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros take on the title roles of Wagner’s greatest opera. This is a role debut for both and should be a primer for what they may do with this repertory in future years.
Luisa Miller – San Francisco Opera (July 31- August 1)
San Francisco Opera will close out its month of streams with a 2015 production of this Verdi classic. The opera will feature a star-studded lineup of singers including Leah Crocetto, Michael Fabiano, Vitaliy Bilyy, and Daniel Sumegi. Nicola Luisotti conducts.
