Johann Kalvelage Taken to Hospital in the Middle of ‘Don Giovanni’ Performance at Theater Chemnitz

During the opening night performance of “Don Giovanni” at the Theater Chemnitz, Johann Kalvelage experienced health problems and was taken to the hospital.

The opera company released a statement noting, “the singer Johann Kalvelage required medical attention after the first act of Mozart’s opera ‘Don Giovanni.’ He had been playing the role of Leporello. In the second part of the performance, Markus Marquardt, who had been watching the premiere from the audience, spontaneously stepped in. He is a member of the Dresden State Opera ensemble and has close ties to the Chemnitz Opera.”

According to reports Marquardt snag from the wings while the stage movements were performed by assistant director Antonia Bär.

Kalvelage is reportedly  recovering and was able to be discharged from the hospital on Friday evening.

Kalvelage is a German bass who has performed at the Theater Basel, Staatstheater Darmstadt, Nationaltheater Mannheim, and Opera Bergen and is an ensemble member of  Theater Chemnitz.

The next performance of “Don Giovanni” is set to take place on Feb. 14, 2026.
