Janai Brugger, Karen Slack, Ginger Costa-Jackson Star In Top 5 Operas To See This Weekend (North America)

This weekend’s recommendations are full of variety of repertory spread across the U.S. including two essential world premieres and the performance of a rare work. All of them feature tremendous star power. Here are the five operas that we recommend for your Father’s Day celebration (in alphabetical order by company).

The Marriage of Figaro – Cincinnati Opera

Saturday night will be the final performance of Cincinnati Opera’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” which will star Andrew Wilkowske, Janai Brugger, Joseph Lattanzi, Susanna Phillips, and Rihab Chaieb, among others. Marc Piollet conducts a production by Stephen Lawless.

The Central Park Five – Long Beach Opera

On Saturday, Long Beach Opera will premiere this new opera by Anthony Davis and Richard Wesley. The work centers on the case of five African American and Latino teenagers that were unjustly convicted of a rape only to be exonerated 13 years later. The work stars Derrell Acon, Babatunde Akinboboye, Cedric Berry, Ashley Faatoalia, Orson Van Gay, and Nathan Granner, among others. The opera will be directed by Andreas Mitisek and conducted by Leslie Dunner.

Fire Shut Up in My Bones – Opera Theatre of Saint Louis

Saturday will be the world premiere performance of “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” a new opera by Terence Blanchard and Kasi Lemmons. The work stars Julia Bullock, Karen Slack, Davóne Tines, and Chaz-men Williams-Spinner. William Long conducts while James Robinson directs.

La Belle Hélène – Odyssey Opera

On Friday and Sunday, the Odyssey Opera will conclude its season with performances of the Offenbach work, which will star Ginger Costa-Jackson in the title role. Ben Wager, Adam Fisher, David McFerrin, and Jaime Korkos star. Gil Rose conducts.

Rusalka – San Francisco Opera

Opening on Sunday, Rachel Willis-Sørensen stars in the title role alongside Brandon Jovanovich as the Prince. The super-star cast also features Jamie Barton in her iconic role of Jezibaba and Kristinn Sigmundsson as Vodník. Eun Sun Kim conducts in her San Francisco Opera debut.
