Ben Bliss, Tyler Duncan, Joélle Harvey, Samantha Hankey Headline Bard Music Festival’s ‘Nadia Boulanger and Her World’

The Bard Music Festival has unveiled the full slate of its “Nadia Boulanger and Her World.”

For the purposes of this article, the focus will be on operatic and vocal programs and performers.

First up is “Program One: The Exemplary” which will feature Boulanger’s music alongside that of Lili Boulanger, Praulx Rainier, Louise Talma, Grazyna Bacewiz, and Julia Perry. The showcase will star Joshua Guerrero, Samantha Hankey, Joelle Harvey, and Joshua Hopkins among many others. Leon Botstein conducts The Orchestra Now.

Performance Date: August 6, 2021

The second program will be dedicated to Boulanger’s contemporaries and colleagues. Tyler Duncan and Samantha Martin (and others) will headline a performance featuring music by Boulanger, Lili Boulanger, Debussy, Florent Schmitt, Ravel, Fauré, and Koechlin, among others.

Performance Date: August 7, 2021

Joélle Harvey, Annie Rosen, and Tyler Duncan will perform music by Brahms, Bach, Chabrier, Stravinsky, Messiaen, and Français, among others in a program dedicated to music for two pianos, performed here by Fei-Fei and Orion Weiss.

“The Epitome of Chic: Paris Between Wars” will star Tyler Duncan, Alexis Seminario, and others as they perform music by Menu, Satie, Boulanger, Tailleferre, Auric, Roussel, and Barraine.

“Teachers, Mentors, and Friends of the Boulanger Sisters” will feature music by Widor, Dukas, and Poulenc. The program will be headlined by tenor Nicholas Phan.

“L’Esprit de Paris” will feature arias, songs, and piano works by Boiledieu, Donizetti, Boulanger, Pugno, Satie, Monnot, and Poulenc, among others. The showcase will be headlined by Tyler Duncan, Rebecca Ringle Kamarei, and pianist Erika Switzer. The concert will also include the Bard Festival Chamber Players.

The Bard Festival Vocal Ensemble and Players will take on music by Tallis, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Bach, Fauré, Stravinsky, Boulanger, Hindemith, and Manziarly in “Boulanger the Curator.” James Bagwell conducts.

Ben Bliss, Theo Hoffman, and Joshua Hopkins perform music by Ethel Smyth, Lili Boulanger, Walter Piston, Aaron Copland, and Grazyna Bacewicz. The concert will also feature the Bard Festival Chorale and the American Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Bagwell and Leon Botstein.

Performance Date: August 14, 2021

The Bard Festival Chorale, under the music direction of James Bagwell will perform choral and organ works by Boulanger, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Cécile Chaminade, Vierne, Dupré, and Ibert, among others. Renée Louprette performs at the organ.

Performance Date: August 15, 2021

“Boulanger’s Legacy: Modernities” will feature performances by Tyler Duncan, Hailey McAvoy, and Chelsea Fingal DeSouza, among others. The showcase will include music by Carter, Walker, Piazzolla, Boulez, Glass, and Thea Musgrave.

Performance Date: August 15, 2021

“Boulanger’s Credo” will feature music by Boulanger, Thomson, and Fauré. Ben Bliss, Janai Brugger, and Joshua Hopkins will perform alongside the Bard Festival Chorale and the American Symphony Orchestra. Leon Botstein conducts.
