Irina Lungu has canceled Gounod’s “Romeo et Juliette” at the Teatro Petruzzelli.

The soprano took to social media and said, “Dear friends, unfortunately I will have to wait for another opportunity to make my debut in this beautiful theatre. I got a severe tracheitis that is not resolving quickly. With a broken heart I have to say goodbye to my Juliette here, I won’t be able to go on stage. I thank Teatro Petruzzelli and my wonderful colleagues for their support. A big good luck to everyone!”

She added, “My next engagement is in October with La traviata, and meanwhile I must heal. A big hug.”

As a result, Claudia Pavone will replace Lungu in the role of Juliette. Pavone is an Italian soprano who recently performed “La Traviata” at the Teatro San Carlo and is set to perform this season in Sassari and Toulouse.

”Romeo et Juliette” opens on Sept. 14 with Ivan Magrì also starring and Jordi Bernàcer conducting. A second cast is set to star Ani Yorentz and Mario Rojas.
