International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2019 Winners Announced

The winners of the 38th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition have been announced.

The competition, founded by Hans Gabor of the Wiener Kammeroper, prides itself as being “THE ‘springboard’ for a career in opera,” according to its website. Previous participants and winners include such stars as Elina Garanča, Angela Gheorghiu, Angela Meade, Antonio Poli, Stuart Skelton, Rachel Willis-Sørensen, and Pretty Yende, to name just a few.

The Competition’s Finals Concert, held on Jul. 7, 2019  at the Congress Center in the city of Villach, opened the Carinthian Summer Music Festival, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Finalists were accompanied by the Carinthian Symphony Orchestra, led by Alexander Joel. The jury included John Mordler, Heribert Germeshausen, David Gowland, Toni Gradsack, Olga Kapanina, Guntars Kirsis, Guy Montavon, Hein Mulders, Bjorn Peters, Christina Scheppelmann, Florian Scholz, Christoph Seuferle, Alard von Rohr, and Diana Zola.

Russian soprano Valeriia Saviskaia was granted 1st Prize for Opera, as well as the Media Prize. South African tenor Boikhutso Owen Metsileng took 2nd Prize along with the Hans Gabor Prize, while Slovakian soprano Slávka Zámečníková received 3rd Prize. The Audience Prize and CS Rising Stars engagement were awarded to South African soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha. Finally, the Wil Keune Prize went to Russian tenor Egor Zhuravskii.
