IN Series to Present First Reading of Damien Geter’s Faustian ‘Delta King’s Blues’

IN Series is set to present the first musical reading of Damien Geter and Jarrod Lee’s “Delta King’s Blues.”

The reading, set for Jan. 26, 2025, at 4 p.m. at the MLK Library Auditorium in Washington D.C., will feature Curtis Bannister as Robert Johnson, Carl Dupont as the Devil, Melissa Wimbish as Virginia, Marvin Wayne Allen III as Willy, and Jonathan Pierce Rhodes as the son.

The new opera explores the legend of Robert Johnson, who “sold his soul to the devil” to learn the blues and invented the new genre of American music.

“The music of my chamber opera ‘Delta King’s Blues’ is certainly a stylized version of Robert Johnson’s own blues making, but also incorporates a sound world that is akin to what we know as contemporary ‘classical’ music,” said Geter per an official press release. “These palettes exist to place the listener in Johnson’s world, as well as the opposing, mysterious, and menacing place of the Crossroads where Johnson is said to have sold his soul.”

Proceeds from the event will be used toward completing the commission of the new opera.
