Virginia Opera to Present Damien Geter’s ‘Cotton’

By David Salazar

Virginia Opera is set to present Damien Geter’s “Cotton.”

The song cycle, which premiered as part of LyricFest’s 20th anniversary season, celebrates African-American heritage through a fusion between music and poetry inspired by the photography of Philadelphia artist John Dowell.

Audiences will hear baritone Adam Richardson and mezzo-soprano Tesia Kwarteng, with the composer attending select performances.

Performances kick off on Jan. 30 at St. Mary’s Basilica in Norfolk, followed by a Jan. 31 showcase at Norfolk State University. On Feb. 1, audiences at the Concert Hall at VCU will witness the performance before it heads to the Old Town Hall in Fairfax on Feb. 6. The tour ends on Feb. 7 at the Richmond Public Library.

All performances are free to the public.
