By David Salazar

IN Series Opera is teaming up with the Mexican Cultural Institute to present “Las Místicas de México.”

The experience, which is slated for March 9-10 at Dupont Underground, March 15-16 at the Mexican Cultural Institute, and March 23-24 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Baltimore, will feature a new rendition of a 12th century chant opera by Anna Deeny Morales. Tina Chancey conducts Hesperus.

“For me, this has been a deeply moving dialogue through time and geographies between contemporary women artists based in the US, and Mexican women artists, intellectuals, mothers, and activists,” Morales said in an official press statement issued by the company.

The performance will also include music by such composers and vocalists as Gabriela Ortiz, Toña la Negra, Cavela Vargas, and María Grever. It will also include poetry by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz set to music by Allison Sniffen.

The production will star Shana Oshiro, Elizabeth Mondragon, Hunter Shaner, Peter Joshua Burroughs, Luz Nicolas, Maribeth Diggle, Elise Jenkins, Anamer Castrello, and the Children’s Chorus of Washington.
