How to Watch Teatro alla Scala’s Opening Night ‘Don Carlo’ Starring Anna Netrebko & Francesco Meli

The Teatro alla Scala is set to broadcast Verdi’s “Don Carlo” on Dec. 7, 2023, continuing its tradition of showcasing opening night on Rai1 and Radio3.

It will be the first time that the theater present an opera in 4K. The opening night will also be broadcast on ARTE for Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg. NHK will showcase the opera in Japan and Medici TV will stream it internationally. The opera will also be in cinemas in Spain, Switzerland, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Verdi’s “Don Carlo” has inaugurated the season eight times in 1868, 1878, 1912, 1926, 1968, 1977, 1992 and 2008. This season Riccardo Chailly will conduct the production, which will star Francesco Meli as Don Carlo, Anna Netrebko as Elisabetta di Valois, Michele Pertusi as Filippo II, Elīna Garanča as Principessa d’Eboli, Luca Salsi as Marchese di Posa, and Ain Anger as Grande Inquisitore.

Lluís Pasqual will direct the production, which includes sets by Daniel Bianco, costumes by Franca Squarciapino, lighting by Pascal Mérat, video projections by Franc Aleu, and choreography by Nuria Castejón.
