Hong Kong Professional Vocalists Association Brings Bizet’s ‘Le Docteur Miracle’ to French May 2026
By David SalazarThe Hong Kong Professional Vocalists Association (HKPVA) will present a reimagined production of Georges Bizet’s “Le Docteur Miracle” as part of French May 2026.
The production draws on a version of the score re-orchestrated by Marco Iannelli, who has adapted Bizet’s original harmonies for reduced forces to heighten clarity and theatrical immediacy. A fairy-tale staging concept, first developed for a 2024 production at the Guangzhou Opera House, frames the opera’s characters within a courtly storybook world. HKPVA’s 75-minute production features French sung numbers, English dialogue, and Chinese and English surtitles, accompanied by a chamber ensemble.
Ashley Chui directs the production, with Jason Liu on the podium. The cast features soprano Liu Zhuoying, mezzo-soprano Judy Honor, tenor Zeng Yuqi, and baritone Yi Guanheng. Ashley Chui directs the production, with Jason Liu on the podium.
Performances are set for May 21–22 at Tung Po’s Multi-purpose Hall.
