British director William Relton will stage Verdi’s “Macbeth” at Opera på Skäret, which opens July 31, 2027.

Relton began his career as an actor, making his professional debut in London’s West End in 1971 at age 14. He later trained as a tenor and worked as a singer and actor before moving into directing. His acting roles included Hamlet and parts in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

He began working as an opera director in 1993 when he stepped in at short notice on a production of Mozart’s “Così fan tutte,” and became a freelance director the following year. His credits include “The Barber of Seville,” “La bohème,” “Turandot,” and “Don Giovanni,” and he has worked with English National Opera and companies and festivals across Europe. In Sweden, he has also directed at Drottningholm Palace Theatre, Läckö Castle Opera, and Vadstena Akademien.

Performances of the production run through August 29 at the company’s home in a former timber warehouse by Lake Ljusnarn in Bergslagen, Sweden, with opening performances on July 31 and August 1. This will be Relton’s third Verdi production at the festival, after “Otello” in 2014 and “Don Carlo” in 2018.

“Verdi loved Shakespeare and knew his works well. He created three masterpieces based on Shakespeare’s works, and ‘Macbeth’ was the first. He created two fascinating, compelling leading roles and wrote magnificent music for the ensemble. I can’t wait to ‘raise the roof’ at Skäret with this great work. And talking of threes, this will be my third production there. That bodes well,” Relton said, per an official press release.
