Heartbeat Opera to Present ‘ORGY & BESS: Deep Throats & High Notes’

By David Salazar

Heartbeat Opera will mark the 10th anniversary of its annual drag opera tradition with “ORGY & BESS: Deep Throats & High Notes,” running Oct. 30–31 and Nov. 1, 4, 6–8, 2025, at Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village.

The production, created by Co-Founder Ethan Heard and Artistic Director Jacob Ashworth, takes inspiration from “Porgy & Bess” while skewering the broader opera canon. In this satirical reimagining, Bess encounters operatic “queens” from such iconic works as “Madama Butterfly,” “Turandot,” “Norma,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “Giulio Cesare,” “The Mikado,” “The Wiz,” “Rent,” and more, with inventive arrangements by Music Director Dan Schlosberg.

The cast includes Jamilyn Manning, Angela Yam, Sishel Claverie, Bernard Holcomb, and John Taylor Ward.

Costumes and makeup are designed by David Quinn, Maiko Ando, and Mio Gubernic. Heard directs.
