Heartbeat Opera to Present ‘Faust’ Adaptation
By Francisco SalazarNew York’s Heartbeat Opera is set to present a new adaptation of Charles Gounod’s “Faust.”
The new production will be showcased for seven performances between May 13 and 25, 2025 at Baruch Performing Arts Center.
Co-adapted by Heartbeat Opera Artistic Director Jacob Ashworth and director Sara Holdren, Faust is reimagined into something new with a surprising twist ending. Inspired by the 1859 critical edition, which shines a light on the dialogue of the opera, Heartbeat’s Faust reworks dialogue into something much more jarring, cutting-edge, and modern. The opera’s original three hours have also been trimmed to a 100-minute whirlwind.
The company has also adapted the score with Francisco Ladrón de Guevara re-orchestrating Gounod’s lush score.
“Faust” will star Orson Van Gay II, Rachel Kobernick, and John Taylor Ward.
