By David Salazar

Harmonium Choral Society will present “Ride the Storm” on Saturday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. at Morristown United Methodist Church in Morristown, New Jersey.

The program celebrates America’s revolutionary ideals with music by David Thomson, Melissa Dunphy, Jackson Berkey, Laurel Luke Christensen, and Mark Miller, alongside winning entries from Harmonium’s 29th annual New Jersey High School Choral Composition Contest.

Morris County sophomore Theo Tavi Hein claimed first place in this year’s student contest with a setting of Sara Teasdale’s “Spring in War-Time.” Columbia High School senior Gabriel Tarrow is runner-up. Honorable mentions were awarded to Basking Ridge senior Nate Lawton of Rutgers Preparatory School and JFK Memorial High School freshman Anuj Shah.

“From William Billings to Leonard Bernstein and exciting fiddle tunes, this concert has something for everyone. We are especially proud of world premiere commissions by composers-in-residence Mark Miller and Laurel Luke Christensen, and the title work by local composer David Thomson. Three of the winning student pieces will be performed and will leave you inspired and amazed,” said Artistic Director Dr. Anne Matlack, per an official statement.

Harmonium Choral Society, directed by Dr. Matlack since 1987,  is a 100-voice chorus that has commissioned more than 30 works by contemporary composers. The organization has also received the Chorus America Education and Outreach Award for its student composition contest.
