George Street Playhouse to Present Play Based on Opera Legend Marian Anderson

By David Salazar

George Street Playhouse will close its 2025–26 season with “My Lord, What a Night,” running April 28 through May 17 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Written by Deborah Brevoort and directed by Sheldon Epps, the play is inspired by the life of opera legend Marian Anderson. The work begins in 1937, when Anderson is turned away from a hotel due to her race and is taken in for the night by Albert Einstein. The evening sparks a friendship that lasts nearly two decades, eventually leading to Anderson’s historic 1939 performance on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and continuing until Einstein’s death in 1955.

“I hope that audiences will appreciate the value of enduring friendships as depicted in the play. And also, that they will (ironically) be reminded of the importance of finding and raising your voice in the face of injustice. So important then. And just as important now,” director Sheldon Epps told OperaWire.

Rashidra Scott, known for her Broadway work in Sunset Boulevard and Company, stars as Marian Anderson. Anthony Cochrane, familiar to television audiences from “The Good Fight,” plays Albert Einstein. The cast is rounded out by Mitch Greenberg as Albert Flexner and Gayle Samuels as Mary Church Terrell.
