The Royal Swedish Opera has announced Gasometer will be its stage while the opera house’s renovations take place.

The unique gas clock in Stockholm is currently being constructed into a stage space for opera, ballet, and classical music. Gasometer is housed in a former industrial building in the Norra Djurgårdsstaden, a part of Stockholm which has been transformed from an industrial area to a modern and vibrant district. The opera company plans to move in on Feb. 1, 2027.

The Opera’s stage in Gasometer will have room for 1,600 people in the audience. Throughout the remodel the Royal Swedish Opera will increase the capacity of its auditorium by almost 30 percent. A recent survey conducted by NOVUS on behalf of the Royal Swedish Opera shows that more than one in three of all those who have not yet taken part in the Royal Opera’s activities want to do so.

“Finally, we can present a solution where our business can live, develop and take steps into the 2030s, even during the renovation period! The government has been clear that the Royal Swedish Opera’s mission as a national stage remains unchanged throughout the period that the Opera House is being rebuilt,” CEO Fredrik Lindgren stated in a press release. “Therefore, it has been crucial for us to find a stage where we can continue to work with artistic height and where we can also continue to develop the performing arts.” He continues, “There is already a high demand for our performances. That’s why we’re happy that even more people will be able to see our productions. We are now taking the step into a new exciting stage room, which is located in a growing part of Stockholm. This gives us the opportunity to broaden our audience and reach out to more people.”

The Royal Swedish Opera will need additional premises for administration, rehearsal and other activities. These spaces have not yet been determined.
