G. Schirmer and Wise Music Group have announced a new publishing agreement with Canadian composer Ian Cusson.

Cusson, who is of Métis and French-Canadian heritage, is known for his opera, orchestral works, and art song compositions.

The centerpiece of Cusson’s upcoming schedule is the world premiere of his new opera, “Empire of Wild,” at the Canadian Opera Company on May 1, 2027. The work sets a libretto by Cherie Dimaline, adapted from her bestselling novel of the same name, and unfolds against the landscape of Georgian Bay, following a woman’s search for her missing husband. COC Music Director Johannes Debus will lead seven performances of Yvette Nolan’s production.

On the orchestral front, the UK premiere of Cusson’s song cycle “Un cri s’élève en moi” will be performed by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal at the Edinburgh Festival on August 20. The US premiere of his tone poem “1Q84: Sinfonietta Metamoderna,” inspired by Haruki Murakami’s novel, is set for May 13–14, 2027 with the Seattle Symphony. The work was recently recorded by the National Arts Centre Orchestra under Alexander Shelley.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to have my works published by G. Schirmer,” Cusson said of the new partnership, citing the publisher’s century of experience alongside its forward-thinking approach to the industry.
