Fresh Squeezed Opera is set to showcase the New York Premiere of Huang Ruo’s “Bound” in a production by Ashley Tata on April 13-18, 2019. The work will be presented at the Rose Nagelberg Theatre and is supported by a grant from the Mills-Tanenbaum Foundation.

The chamber opera was inspired by the headline “Diane Tran, Honor Student at Texas High School, Jailed for Missing School” and was written by librettist Bao-Long Chu.

Prior to the performances, the company will showcase a special preview and conversation about the work with the co-creators at the Asia Society in New York on March 21. The presentation will also feature performances by Fant-Tao Jiang and Guang Yang.

“Bound” had its world premiere at the Houston Grand Opera in 2014 and was also followed by the composer’s opera “An American Soldier,” which was first performed at the Washington National Opera in 2014; at 2018 showcase of that latter opera was also presented at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Ruo has also composed “Paradise Interrupted,” an Installation opera in one act.
