Francesco Meli will open the Teatro alla Scala’s 2019-20 season.

The Teatro alla Scala announced that the Italian tenor will join Anna Netrebko on Dec. 7 for a new production of Puccini’s “Tosca.” The new production will mark the tenor’s return to the role of Mario Cavaradossi, which he debuted in 2016 at the Teatro Carlo Felice.

It will also reunite Netrebko and Meli after having collaborated on new productions of “Il Trovatore,” “Aida,” and “Giovanna d’Arco” at the Salzburg Festival and La Scala.

Additionally, this will be Meli’s fourth production of the La Scala 2019-20 season as he is also slated for “Il Trovatore,” “La Gioconda,” and “La Traviata.”

Meli will also join Luca Salsi, who portrays Scarpia and Riccardo Chailly, who conducts the new production by Davide Livermore. Saioa Hernandez sings the title role in three performances slated for January.

The production opens on Dec. 7, 2019 and runs through Jan. 8, 2020.
