By Francisco Salazar

Opera Namibia is set to present the first Namibian Opera in September.

The work entitled, “Chief Hijangua” by the composer and conductor Eslon Hindundu will have its premiere in Windhoek at the National Theatre of Namibia.

The work, which is a production between Nambia and Germany, originated in 2019 when Kim Mira Meyer and Eslon Hindundu met while working together at the Immling Opera Festival in Bad Endorf. Both came up with an idea for an opera project between the two countries.

The new project by Opera Nambia will also feature other works currently being developed.

The opera is set to star Sakiwe Mksoana, Henrike Henoch, Natasha Ndjiharine, Monde Masimini, Rheinaldt Tshepo Moagi, Galilei Njembo, and Yonwaba Mbo.

“Chief Hijangua” is set to open on Sept. 9 in a production by Kim Mira Meyer.
