FEDORA Education Prize Winner ‘Panoptique’ to Make World Premiere

By Afton Markay

“Panoptique,” the 2023 FEDORA Education Prize Winner led by Le Collectif Meute will reach the stage for its world premiere at La Barcarolle on April 20.

The work stems from three years of research and workshops in prisons and psychiatric institutions in France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. It features opera and choral music, the mixing of classical and electronic music, and pulls dialogue from Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise,” and contemporary experiences of confinement.

“Panoptique” advocates for collaborative artistic practices, empowering participants to co-create and collectively shape an artwork mirroring their lived experiences. Through a 90-minute performance, the audience is immersed in both the psychological and physical confines of the space. In an official press release, it was described as “a meeting point between the stage, musical aesthetics, closed environments, and a journey through a blank landscape where bodies and voices seek to inscribe themselves.”

The project was written by dramaturge Sarah Thery and composer Gil Mortio. Claire Pasquier directs the premiere.
