Experiments in Opera to Open Season with Synthesizer-based Premieres

By Logan Martell

Experiments in Opera will be opening its season on Friday, November 2, 2018, with the world premiere of four new works in a program titled “Modularias.” The works will highlight the interaction between the human voice and the modular synthesizer in making music.

The works which comprise “Modularias” are Jason Cady’s “Candy Corn,” which features soprano Alize Rozsynyai and baritone Calder Craig; Joan La Barabara’s “Viriginia and the Time Machine,” featuring soprano Julia Meadows; Kamala Sankaram’s “The Wife,” featuring Sankaram as vocalist and Red Wierenga on the synthesizer; and Andrew Raffo Dewar’s “Volver,” featuring vocalist Roland Burks. The performances will be held at The Flea Theater in Tribeca, New York.

Experiment in Opera’s founders say in a press release: “We are always looking for ways to challenge ourselves and our audiences with different approaches toward presenting new opera. In the case of ‘Modularias,’ we built a show around pairing the voice with a specific instrument and sound world.

“In the last 10 years, there has been a resurgence of interest in modular synthesizers as they have gotten cheaper, smaller and generally more accessible for enthusiasts and musicians. We are very excited to present the new music on this program and the beautiful instruments onstage as the first event of our season-long residency at The Flea Theater.”

Since its inception in 2010, Experiments in Opera has strived to explore unconventional music and artistic collaboration, commissioning 65 new works over the last seven years.
