The Opéra National de Paris is set to present William Kentridge’s production of “Wozzeck” starting on March 10, 2022.

The showcase, which will be conducted by Susanna Mälkki, will star Johan Reuter in the title role with John Daszak as the Drum Major, Tansel Akzeybek as Andrès, Gerhard Siegel as Hauptmann, Falk Struckmann as the Doctor, and Eva-Maria Westbroek as Marie.

Other cast members include Mikhail Timoshenko, Tobias Westman, Heinz Göhrig, Marie-Andrée Bouchard-Lesieur, and Vincent Morell.

The opera will run for a total of seven performances through March 30, 2022. There will be a pre-opening showcase for the young reserved for March 7, 2022; this event is exclusive to people under 28-years-old.

The Kentridge production is presented in co-production with the Salzburg Festival, the Metropolitan Opera, the Canadian Opera Company, and Opera Australia.

Of the production, OperaWire noted in its review of the Met Opera showcase that “overall, it is truly challenging to assess this evening. In many ways, the sensory overload that you experience throughout is exactly what you might want from a night at the opera. And yet, with such a challenging work, the delivery of this production makes it very difficult to interact with the opera on an emotional and intellectual level. You constantly feel like you’re trying to keep up with a fast-moving train. On some level there is an understanding that this is a ride you probably have to take again to get more out of it. But the first trip might leave you so drained and lacking in payoff that you might not want to.”
