
Elza van den Heever & Peter Mattei Lead Metropolitan Opera’s New ‘Salome’
By Francisco SalazarThe Metropolitan Opera is set to present a new production of Strauss’ “Salome.”
The opera opens on April 29 marking the first new Met production of the opera in more than 20 years. Claus Guth directs the production with an acclaimed cast that includes Elza van den Heever and Peter Mattei who reunite on the Met stage following Berg’s “Wozzeck” during the 2019–20 season.
They will be joined by a cast that includes mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as Herodias, tenor Gerhard Siegel as Herod, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the new production.
Maestro Derrick Inouye conducts the May 10 and 24 performances, and tenor Chad Shelton appears as Herod on May 10.
“Salome” will be transmitted to movie theaters as part of the company’s Live in HD series on May 17. The May 17 performance will also be broadcast live over The Robert K. Johnson Foundation—Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network. The performances on April 29 and May 17 will be broadcast live on Metropolitan Opera Radio on the SiriusXM app.
