Elīna Garanča, Aida Garifullina & Maria Guleghina Headline Teatro Colon’s 2019 Season

The Teatro Colón has announced its 2019 season featuring eight main stage productions, concert operas, and a number of international star-making debuts.

Here is a look at what to expect next season.

Mainstage Opera

Maurizio Benini conducts a new production of Verdi’s “Rigoletto” directed by Jorge Takla. Fabián Veloz and Leonardo López Linares share the title role while Pavel Valuzhin and Pablo Karaman alternate the Duke. Ekaterina Siurina and Laura Rizzo round out the cast as Gilda.

Performance Dates: March 12-22, 2019

Andre Previn’s “A Streetcar Named Desire” will get a new production by Rita Cosentino. David Brophy conducts the work with Daniela Tabernig, David Adam Moore, Sarah Jane McMahon, Eric Fennell, and Victoria Livengood leading the cast.

Performance Dates: May 7-14, 2019

Christian Badea conducts a revival of Puccini’s “Turandot” with legendary soprano María Guleghina. Nina Warren and Mónica Ferracani also star in the title role. Kristian Benedikt, who recently made his Metropolitan Opera debut sings the role of Calaf alongside Marcello Giordani and Enrique Folger. Verónica Cangemi, Jaquelina Livieri, and Marina Silva share Liu with James Morris and Fernando Radó alternating Timur.

Performance Dates: June 25-July 7, 2019

Carla Filipcic Holm sings the title role in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” with Alejo Pérez conducting. Gustavo López Manzitti sings Bacchus while Jennifer Holloway performs the Composer. Ekaterina Lekhina rounds out the cast as Zerbinetta.

Performance Dates: July  26-August 4, 2018

Jean-Christophe Spinosi conducts concert performances of Monteverdi’s “L’Incoronazione di Poppea” with Josè Maria Lo Monaco, Fillipo Mineccia, Anna Sohn,  Francesco Fernandes-Rueda, Rupert Charlesworth, Carlo Allemano, and Emilie Rose-Brey

Performance Dates: August 30-Sept. 4, 2019

Favio Sparvol directs a new production of Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” with Srba Dinić conducting. Nicola Ulivieri sings the title role with Lucas Debevec Mayer and Victor Torres alternating. Jaquelina Livieri and Laura Polverini share the role of Norina while Santiago Ballerini and Santiago Martinez alternate the role of Ernesto. Darío Solari and Cristian Maldonado round out the cast as Malatesta.

Performance Dates: Sept. 24-Oct. 2, 2019

Carlos Trunsky directs a new production of Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” Manuel Coves conducting. Daniel Taylor, Marisú Pavón, and Ellen Mc Ateer lead the cast.

Performance Dates: Nov. 8-12, 2019

To celebrate Jacques Offenbach’s 200th birthday the Teatro Colon will bring a new production of “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” Ramon Vargas in the title role. Eugenio Zanetti directs the new production which also stars Rachel Gilmore, Milijana Nikolic, Virginia Tola, and Sophie Koch. The opera’s second cast stars Rubén Amoretti and Fernando Radó in the title role and  Oriana Favaro, Guadalupe Barrientos, Paula Almerares, and Adriana Mastrángelo.

Performance Dates: Nov. 29-Dec. 7, 2019

Chamber Opera

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Chamber opera at the Teatro Colon, the season will include three productions. The first will be Thomas Ades “Powder Her Face” followed by Rachel Portman’s “The Little Prince” and concluding with Mozart’s “Mitridate, re di Ponto.” 

Concerts 

The Orquesta di Filharmonica de Buenos Aires will feature a number of vocalists including Adriana Mastrangelo and Tara Erraught as well as concert performances of Mozart’s “Requiem,” Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust,” and Wengenroth’s “Le Baile.” 

International Concerts 

Elīna Garanča is set to make her Teatro Colon debut as well as Aida Garifullina. Thomas Hampson and Luca Pisaroni will also bring their award-winning tour “No Tenors Allowed” to Latin America for this first time.
