The Dutch National Opera is set to present the world premiere of “Le lacrime di Eros.”

The production by Romeo Castellucci is built around music from late Renaissance Florence, by composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Giulio Caccini, Jacopo Peri, and others. The work is divided into five thematic “books,” each showing a different allegorical aspect of love: technological love, love as torture, love between humans and animals, the heart aflame, and love beyond mortality.

Raphaël Pichon and his Ensemble Pygmalion will lead the performance starring soprano Jeanine De Bique, mezzo-soprano Katia Ledoux, baritone Gyula Orendt, and tenor Zachary Wilder.

The production will also feature electronic compositions by Scott Gibbons who will use the sounds of the performers’ bodies to explore human passion in all its tenderness and cruelty.

“Le lacrime di Eros” will open on Nov. 15 and run through Nov. 21, 2024.
