Sweden’s Drottningholms Slottsteater will present Telemann’s “Orpheus” next season.

Set for its premiere performance on August 2, 2025, this will be the first time that the company presents the Telemann work. The opera was rediscovered at the end of the 20th century and deepens the story of Orpheus and Eurydice via the introduction of the character of Orasia, Queen of Thrace, who is in love with Orpheus.

“If the message of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is that you cannot go back and change your destiny, the message of the addition of Orasia is that you cannot change the destiny of another person either,” says the official press release regarding the opera’s themes.

The opera will be conducted by Francesco Corti, who added music by Telemann and other contemporary Hamburg composers to the rediscovered, but incomplete score.  The opera will be directed by Elena Barbalich. The cast will be unveiled at a later date.

“Orpheus” runs from August 2 – 116, 2025.
