The Deutsche Oper am Rhein has announced that it will extend its closure until at least March 2021.

“Due to the planning uncertainty for our future performances, we have decided to resume our program in March 2021 at the earliest,” said the opera house in a statement. The decision was made in consultation with the chairman of the supervisory board of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and the two cultural departments.

The opera house added that it was not able to give a precise date for resumption of performances.

The German government has extended the national lockdown until at least Feb. 14, 2021. Many German theaters, concert halls, and opera houses have already closed until April 2021. The Semperoper Dresden has canceled the remaining part of its regular 2020-21 season and announced its intention to launch an alternative program between April and July 2021.

Germany is undergoing an ongoing COVID-19 epidemiological crisis, with 16,366 new daily cases on Jan. 22, 2021.
