By Nicolas Quiroga

Nix and Virginia Lauridsen donated $2 million to the Des Moines Metro Opera Foundation, in support of the company’s production “The Magic Flute.”

“This is no ordinary ‘Magic Flute’ and Nix and Virginia Lauridsen are visionary philanthropists, transforming our region through leadership support. They understand the value of a vibrant Arts and Culture sector to our community,” said Michael Egel, the General and Artistic Director of Des Moines Metro Opera.

The Lauridsens had previously supported the company in 2016, donating $1 million to revitalize the organization’s administrative headquarters. Virginia Lauridsen is the current chair of the Des Moines Metro Opera Board of Directors and a member of the board of supervisors of the National Opera Center in NY City.

“Nix and I strive to support causes that will benefit the entire community. We believe that Des Moines Metro Opera is an artistic gem. As an internationally acclaimed company, DMMO attracts visitors from around the world and brings a high level of artistic achievement and acclaim to Iowa. We are thrilled that this innovative production of ‘The Magic Flute’ will be performed at the Civic Center, where it will be enjoyed by audiences of all ages,” said Virginia Lauridsen.

The $2 million gift comes just as the company gears up to resume live presentations next month. The company also recently received a major donation for its young artists’ program.
