David Daniels No Longer in AGMA

By Francisco Salazar

Countertenor David Daniels is no longer a member of AGMA, the singer’s union.

The AP News reported last month that following Daniels’ guilty plea to a charge of sexual assault, American Guild of Musical Artists spokesperson Alicia Cook said that the countertenor was no longer a member of the union.

The guild released a letter of censure dated Nov. 20 stating, “We strongly condemn your actions at the University of Michigan, specifically with regards to what appears to be a pattern of soliciting students for sex and offering them money, or both, in exchange for promised career advancement.”

In August Daniels and and his husband, Scott Walters, pleaded guilty to sexual assault of an adult, a second-degree felony, in Houston’s Harris County District Court. After pleading guilty they were sentenced to eight years’ probation and required to register as sex offenders.

In response to the letter from the guild accuser Sam Schultz said, it was the right direction but “Their delay indicates that AGMA does not yet care about abuses within its industry.”

It’s not the first time that Schultz has spoken out against AGMA. In 2020, he resigned from the position of vice president of the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) noting that AGMA was attempting to settle a case with Plácido Domingo behind closed doors.

Last August Daniels suggested he may be returning to the stage in Europe but no plans have been released.
