By Chris Ruel

Composer/pianist Felix Jarrar, along with soprano Caroline Spaeth, mezzo-soprano Eugenia Forteza, and La Cuarta Productions is set to premiere “Change Comes in Full Glory” on Sunday, April 11, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. EDT.

The program features a cantata entitled “The Unsleeping Ones,” as well as two additional pieces penned by Jarrar. The concert will stream on the Sparrow Live platform.

Jarrar’s cantata explores the religious awakening of St. Alexander the Unsleeping, founder of the Monastery of the Unsleeping Ones, an ascetic order of 400 monks established during the third century. Forteza is slated to sing the role of the angel Selaphiel, and Spaeth, the angel Jehudiel.

Forteza and Spaeth will also showcase two additional songs by Jarrar. “Yellow,” sung by Forteza and “Voyelles,” a composition with text by Rimbaud and sung in the original French by Spaeth.

Tickets are $15 and the concert will be available for streaming for 24-hours following the premiere.

Jarrar is a prolific rising composer, whose work has been showcased at Symphony Space, (le) poisson rouge, BAM’s Fisher Hillman Studio, and Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. His works have been performed internationally by artists from the Metropolitan Opera, the Atlantic Music Festival Orchestra, and the duo Unassisted Fold.

Spaeth is an accomplished concert singer, having sung soprano solos in “Carmina Burana,” Handel’s “Messiah,” and Dvořák’s “St. Ludmilla.” She is also the co-host of Apertivi: A Cocktail Hour Concert Series. She appeared as Madeline Usher in a virtual presentation of Jarrar’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.”

Forteza is a frequent collaborator of Jarrar’s, having premiered roles in his operas “Mother Goose,” “Tabula Rasa,” and “A Christmas Carol.” Her most recent award was 2nd place/Honorable Mention for Best Video in the Canto Latino competition, as well as being a Finalist in the Best Singer, Best Performance, and Audience Favorite categories.
