Chelsea Opera Group To Showcase Boito’s ‘Mefistofele’

By David Salazar

The Chelsea Opera Group is preparing to mount a rare performance of Boito’s “Mefistofele” at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre on Sunday, March 24.

The concert performance will be lead by Matthew Scott Rogers and will feature Vazgen Gazaryan as the devil himself. Pablo Bemsch will take on the role of Faust while Elizabeth Llewellyn will interpret the roles of Margarita and Elena (a rare feat these days). Aaron Godfrey-Mays will appear as Wagner and Nereo while Angharad Lyddon will sing the roles of Marta and Pantalis.

Gazaryan recently appeared at the Met Opera in 2017-18, taking on the role of Oroveso in “Norma; he also covered the role of “Mefistofele” in the company’s recent production, which was led by Christian Van Horn.

Bemsch is a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden while Llewellyn is set to appear in the Met Opera’s upcoming “Porgy and Bess; she will be making her Chelsea Opera Group debut.
