Cast Change: Daniel Scofield Steps into Opéra de Monte-Carlo’s ‘Die Walküre’

The Opéra de Monte-Carlo has announced a cast change for its production of Wagner’s “Die Walküre.”

The company said, “Matthias Goerne is replaced by American baritone Daniel Scofield in the role of Wotan.”

Scofield has performed at the Glydnborune Festival, Prague State Opera, Teatro San Carlo, Staatstheater Hannover, and Opera Carolina and Houston Symphony. His repertoire includes the music of Verdi, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Puccini, Haydn, Handel, Britten, Stravinsky, and Mahler.

He set to join a cast that includes Joachim Bäckström, Wilhelm Schwinghammer, Libby Sokolowski, Nancy Weissbach, Ekaterina Semenchuk, Sofia Fomina, Natalia Tanasii, Maire Therese Carmack, Heike Wessels, Anna Lapkovskaja, Freya Apffelstaedt, Niamh O’sullivan, and Kaarin Cecilia Phelps.

“Die Walküre” is set to be performed on Jan. 25, 27 & 29, 2026.
