Cassandra Extavour, Reginald Mobley, & Brian Mummert Among Soloists in ‘BaroQUEER: Historically Informed’

By Afton Markay

ChamberQUEER and the Handel and Haydn Society team up to present “BaroQUEER: Historically Informed.”

The concert featuring music by composers ranging from George Frideric Handel and Jean-Baptiste Lully to Julius Eastman and Caroline Shaw. Performers include soprano Cassandra Extavour, countertenors Reginald Mobley and Doug Dodson, tenor Gregório Taniguchi, and baritones Brian Mummert and Dana Whiteside. The program celebrates queer perspectives that have shaped the early-music revival and influenced generations of boundary-breaking artists.

ChamberQUEER co-founders Mummert and Jules Biber and co-curator Mobley, said in a press release, “this concert asks whose histories inform the way we play and perceive Baroque music, and what would it mean to center performers’ voices and stories?”

There are two installments of “BaroQUEER.” The first is hosted by UU Urban Ministry on May 30. An additional performance is presented by Carnegie Hall Citywide at Judson Memorial Church, the opening night of CQ’s 2025 Pride festival: Queer Ancestry.
