Carnegie Hall & The Knights to Showcase ‘Cloud Variations’

By David Salazar

Carnegie Hall and The Knights will present “Cloud Variations,” a new multidisciplinary work by poet and librettist J. Mae Barizo, on Oct. 23, 2025, at Zankel Hall.

The piece for performer and chamber orchestra is described as reimagining ” poetic forms in a kaleidoscopic meditation on body, desire, environment and technology” and drawing inspiration from the Malay oral poetic form “pantun berkait.” It also features Philip Glass’s Symphony #3.

“This form resonates personally for me because Tagalog, my mother tongue, is a Malayo-Polynesian tongue; the pantun—with its structured pattern of repetition—has been an ongoing source of inspiration for my own creative process,” said Barizo, a recipient of Opera America’s IDEA Residency for emerging librettists, per an official press release.

The work is staged by opera director George R. Miller. The concert kicks off at 7:30 p.m. local time.
