By Afton Wooten

The self-conducted Black and Latinx ensemble Sphinx Virtuosi will perform at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 20.

Taking the stage in Stern Auditorium, the ensemble will present works inspired by the poetry of Langston Hughes and Julia Alvarez. Making her Carnegie Hall debut, soprano Aundi Marie Moore performs “Aria” (“Cantilena”) from Villa Lobos’s “Bachianas brasileiras” No. 5. Also on the program are several New York premieres of instrumental works by ensemble members.

This fall, Sept. 29 – Oct. 22, Sphinx Virtuosi can be heard on tour in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Maryland.

Sphinx Virtuosi is part of the Sphinx Organization which is a social justice organization dedicated to the arts. The organization focuses on education and access, artist development, performing artists, and arts leadership.
