By David Salazar

The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture is set to present a celebration of Black History Month.

Set for Feb. 13, 2025, the showcase will feature soprano Candice Hoyes, who is also a composer, archivist, and curator who has performed with the 2020 NYC JazzFest, Detroit Symphony, and the Blue Note, and has opened for such artists as Chaka Khan, Lalah Hathaway, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, among others. As a composer, she made her Lincoln Center debut with the world premiere of Sadah Espii Proctor’s “adrift” in 2024.

Hoyes is joined by cellist-composer Akua Dixon and clarinetist Don Byron, as well as members of The Harlem Chamber Players.

The program includes the New York Premiere of “We The People” by Dixon as well as music by Hoyes and Chausson.

Terrance McKnight of WQXR will host the free event.
