Bryn Terfel to Retire Scarpia With No Future Met Opera Plans
By Francisco SalazarOn Jan. 9, Bryn Terfel is set to return to the Met after 13 years in “Tosca.”
The bass-baritone will sing his final Scarpia performances according to the New York Times. The bass-baritone, who is now 60, has slowly been retiring roles from his repertoire.
Terfel was originally set to premiere the David McVicar production but fell ill before opening and bowed out back in 2017.
The performances will be special as Terfel, according to the Times, has no future plans with the Met.
General Manager Peter Gelb noted, “I think at this point, we’re just thrilled that he’s coming back and doing this, and we’ll take it from there. He’s in the latter part of his career, but contemplating what he can bring to a role like Scarpia on our stage is truly exciting.”
Terfel did note that while there aren’t many new roles he is interested in, he would like to try “Wozzeck” and Papageno in “The Magic Flute.”
