Brooklyn Art Song Society’s 2019-20 Season To Feature Music of Hagen, Brahms, Canteloube, Grieg, Janácek

The Brooklyn Art Song Society has announced its 2019-20 season, which will include a total of eight concerts.

Everything kicks off with “Roma,” a concert that features Johannes Brahms’ “Zigeunerlieder,” Antonín Dvorák’s “Zigeunermelodien,” Franz Liszt’s “Die Drei Zigeuner,” as well as such violin virtuoso pieces as Maurice Ravel’s “Tzigane,” and Pablo Sarasate’s “Zigeunerweisen.” The concert will feature Tami Petty, Kristin Gornstein, Michael Kelly, Stanichka Dimitrova, and Michael Brofman and Miori Sugiyama at the piano.

Performance Date: Oct. 4, 2091

The second concert, “Chants d’Auvergne” will feature music by Joseph Canteloube as interpreted by sopranos Marnie Breckenridge, Devony Smith, Laura Strickling, and Maria Valdes, and pianists Brent Funderburk and Danny Zelibor.

Performance Date: Nov. 1, 2019

A bonus concert will be dedicated to music by Benjamin Britten as performed by Kristina Bachrach, Andrew Fuchs, and pianist Michael Brofman.

Performance Date: Dec. 6, 2019

“Chopin and Szymanowski” will feature such singers as Amy Owens and Laura Strickling as well as pianists Michael Brofman, Spencer Myer, and Mioir Sugiyama.

Performance Date: Jan 3, 2020

A concert dedicated to the music of “Bartok, Kodaly, and Janácek” will feature such music as “Village Scenes,” “4 Songs,” and “Diary of One Who Disappeared.” The performance will feature Lucy Fitz Gibbon, Caitlin Mead, Kate Maroney, Allison Gish, Dominic Armstrong, and pianists Michael Brofman and Joel Harder

Performance Date: Feb. 7, 2020

“Grieg and Sibelius” will star Krisitna Bachrach, Sarah Brailey, Sara Couden, Brian Mextorf, Michael Brofman, Dmitri Dover, and Daniel Schlosberg.

Performance Date: March 6, 2020

The latest edition of the Dichter Project returns with music by Brahms, Mahler, Schubert, and Schumann, all based on texts by Rückert. The concert will feature Elisabeth Marshall, Blythe Gaissert, Nils Neubert, Mario Diaz-Moresco, Chieh-Fan Yiu, and Spencer Myer.

Finally, the season will end with “New Voices: The Art of Song” in which Brooklyn Art Song Society will join forces with Philadelphia’s LyricFest for the world premiere of Daron Hagen’s “The Art of Song.” Performers will include Justine Aronson, Gilda Lyons, Suzanne DuPlantis, Elisa Sutherland, James Reese, Steven Eddy, Michael Brofman, and Laura Ward.
