Boston Symphony Orchestra Extends Contract with Music Director Andris Nelsons

By Logan Martell

Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced the three-year extension of Andris Nelsons’ contract as Music Director, running until August 2025.

The new contract replaces his current eight-year contract which was set to expire in 2022 and contains an Evergreen Clause which reflects both parties’ intent for long-term collaboration beyond the years set by this new contract extension.

For each year of his new contract, Nelsons will lead the orchestra in a minimum of 12 weeks of performances at Symphony Hall, as well as two weekends of concerts each season at Tanglewood; other duties include annual tours in Europe and Asia, as well as BSO’s Carnegie Hall series.

For the 2021-22 season, Nelsons and BSO will perform a number of works originally slated for their 2020-21 season, including the cycle of Shostakovich symphonies, and new commissioned works by Sofie Gubaidulina, Julia Adolphe, HK Gruber, and more. Details on the upcoming season will be announced at a later date.

On Nelsons’ extension, BSO President and CEO Mark Volpe stated in that press release that “the extension of Andris Nelsons’ contract as Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director reflects a powerfully deep commitment between the orchestra and its conductor to continue growing together towards ever-higher levels of music-making and creating one-of-a-kind concert experiences for their devoted audiences in Boston, the Berkshires, and beyond.”
