Boston Lyric Opera Announces 2020-21 Season

Boston Lyric Opera has announced its 44th Season with four new productions including three company premieres and a Northeast premiere.

The season opens with Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” starring soprano Yulan Piao in her company and role debut as Cio-Cio San, tenor Zach Borichevsky as Lieutenant Pinkerton, mezzo-soprano Nina Yoshida Nelsen in her company debut as Suzuki, and baritone Levi Hernandez as Sharpless. Sarna Lapine will direct the new production with David Angus conducting

Performance Dates: Oct. 16-25, 2020.

Philip Glass’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” makes its company debut with Chelsea Basler and Jesse Darden as siblings Madeline and Roderick Usher. Daniel Belcher plays the narrator William, while James Darrah directs the production. David Angus conducts a chamber ensemble of the BLO orchestra.

Performance Dates: Nov. 18-22, 2020

In BLO’s new Boston-set production of Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel,” Emily Fons and Nicole Haslett sing the title roles. Dana Beth Miller is the mother and the Witch while David McFerrin is Peter, the father. Shura Baryshnikov directs the production with David Angus conducting.

Performance Dates: March 12-21, 2021

Terence Blanchard’s “Champion: An Opera in Jazz,” with libretto by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Michael Cristofer makes his BLO debut. Gordon Hawkins, Renee Tatum, Chris Kenney, Tichina Vaughn, Todd Thomas, and Ariana Wehr star in the production. Vimbayi Kaziboni conducts the score.
