Bloomington Opera Camp™ Gives Casting Power to the People
By Afton MarkayBloomington Opera Camp™ opened its casting process to the community in its”Pre-Production Meeting: Casting” on May 6.
This event took place as part of the company’s community-driven performing arts governance initiative. The first meeting, “Pre-Production Meeting: Repertoire,” which took place on March 29, started the conversation for the upcoming seasons. The latest meeting allowed for the community and stakeholders to gain insight in the casting process and help define the casting criteria including values, qualities, and standards that will guide the casting of the opera “El Imperio de la Luz” (“The Empire of Light”).
Bloomington Opera Camp™ is a Performing Arts Laboratory production. The organization is leading a radical transformation in the governance of the performing arts that gives the power of real decision-making directly to the stakeholders, including community members, students, and professionals. This call to action is setting the stage for a more sustainable, and inclusive future for the performing arts through “shared governance.”
