Opera Camp™ Opens 2025 Registration & Announces Location

By Afton Markay

Registration is open for the 2025 Opera Camp™, which will take place in Bloomington, Indiana.

The Bloomington Opera Camp™ is open to community members and offers unique opportunities for local professional artists and advanced students from local universities. Individuals of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate. Campers will engage in a fully immersive artistic experience, encompassing singing, acting, painting, sculpture, stage design, instrumental performance, production, arts administration, etc—all contributing to the creation of a complete opera production.

Opera Camp™ activities will culminate in a production of its community opera in one act, “El Imperio de la Luz” (“The Empire of Act”). This original opera is inspired by Inca mythology and Peruvian culture, featuring a multilingual libretto in English, Spanish, and Quechua. The program will run from May 27 to June 7 at the Harmony School.

A launch event is scheduled for Feb. 10, hosted by the Office of Entrepreneurship and Career Development at the Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University. This event marks the first public introduction of the Bloomington Opera Camp™ to the local community and serves as an opportunity for all interested participants, families, artists, educators, and press representatives to learn more about the program.

This initiative, which began in 2018, stems from Diego Barbosa-Vásquez’s internationally recognized post-doctoral research in performing arts sustainability.
