Opera seems to be a dominating force in Hollywood with the likes of Ariana Grande and Angelina Jolie training operatically to prepare for roles in “Wicked” and “Maria.” Now Bill Skarsgård has revealed that to prepare for the film “Nosferatu” he also trained with opera singer Ásgerður Júníusdóttir.

According to an interview with USA Today, the actor said he trained with the Icelandic opera singer to lower his voice an octave for the full voice of Orlok.

Skarsgård said, “A lot of it was just the technicality of rooting the voice as deep as you can in your body and using your entire body to make the voice resonate.” He added that Júníusdóttir told him to “place the voice out of your forehead.”

Skarsgård noted, “I was so relaxed and it was just like the most vibrant my voice has ever gotten.” According to the actor he built a 20-minute routine where he’d warm up his voice – but not too warm, “because I needed that gravelliness to it” and then did vocal exercises between takes as well as “a lot of Mongolian throat singing just to have it active and deeply placed.”

Júníusdóttir is a mezzo-soprano who has performed the role of “Carmen” with the Reykjavík City Theatre. She has also performed with the Icelandic Opera and Finnish National Opera.
