By Chris Ruel

Beth Morrison Projects (BMP) has announced the “BMP: Next Gen” concert, co-presented by and filmed at National Sawdust.

The concert is set to stream for free on May 27, 2021, at 7:30 P.M. EDT on the BMP website.

In February 2021, 10 first-round finalists were selected from a pool of 117 entries submitted by young composers from across the United States. The first-round finalists are Gabriel Fynsk, Elizabeth Gartman, Eli Greenhoe, Gabrielle Herbst, Jens Ibsen, Laura Jobin-Acosta, Maya Miro Johnson, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, Timothy Peterson, and Huan Sun.

At the conclusion of the “BMP: Next Gen” concert, a panel, consisting of Beth Morrison, Jecca Barry, and National Sawdust Artistic Director and composer Paola Prestini, along with guest panelists from across the industry, will select two composers to be awarded $5000 commissions for their second-round compositions.

In 2022, the two finalists will each present a 30-minute piece, with the winner being awarded a full commission for an evening-length work that includes development and a world premiere.

Established in 2017-2018, the BMP: Next Gen initiative enables the organization to stay connected to a new generation of composers, singers, and artists who are just exiting school. BMP has nurtured vocal-theater leaders such as David T. Little, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Paola Prestini, Kamala Sankaram.
