The Staatsoper Berlin has announced a cast change for its performances of April 12 and 15 in Wagner’s “Parsifal.”
The company said, “Elīna Garanča has had to cancel the first two performances of Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ on 12 and 15 April due to illness – we wish her a speedy recovery and hope that she will sing the two later performances on 18 and 20 April as planned!”
It added, “However, we are delighted that Tanja Ariane Baumgartner has stepped in at short notice for this large and demanding role. Baumgartner is one of the leading mezzo-sopranos of our time. At the end of last season, she appeared at the Staatsoper in one of the leading roles as Madame Esther in the world premiere of Marc-André Dalbavie’s ‘Melancholie des Widerstands’ and was celebrated for this extraordinary performance by both the audience and the press.”
“Parsifal” will also star Lauri Vasar, René Pape, Andreas Schager, and Tómas Tómasson. The opera will return after seven years as part of the Festtage in a production by Dmitri Tcherniakov and under the musical direction of Philippe Jordan.
