Bayreuth Festival Announces Cast Change for ‘Der Fliegende Holländer’

The Bayreuth Festival has found a replacement for its production of “Der Fliegende Holländer.”

The company said, “the Festival management is extremely pleased that Tomislav Mužek was prepared at very short notice to take over the role of Erik from Andreas Schager, who in turn is standing in for the ill Joseph Calleja in the title role of the new production Parsifal. Many thanks to both singers and welcome back Tomislav Mužek!”

Mužek made his Bayreuth debut in 2003 as the Der Steuermann in “Der Fliegende Holländer.” With the festival, he has performed in productions of “Lohengrin” and “Parsifal. ” He has also performed the role of Erik four times with the company in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018.

Mužek joins a cast that includes Georg Zeppenfeld, Elisabeth Teige, Nadine Weissmann, Attilio Glaser, and Michael Volle. Oksana Lyniv conducts the production by Dmitri Tcherniakov. 

“Der Fliegende Holländer” opens on August 1 and runs through August 18, 2023.
